About Us
Social Spider was founded in 2003 by David Floyd and Mustafa Kurtuldu. Currently based on the border between Hackney and Islington, North London, Social Spider is an agency that brings together print and web design, community projects, developing opportunities and consultancy. Social Spider is a not-for-profit organisation. Any surplus funds support a portfolio of Social Spider generated projects furthering our commitment to widening access to opportunities and availability of information and resources.

The Social Spider team divide their time between contracted work, consultancy and self-generated projects.

David Floyd

David Floyd enjoyed four years as Editor of Exposure magazine, the multi-award winning youth participation project based in North London. He developed partnerships with local and national bodies and funders for Exposure, enabling Exposure to meet the goal of providing young people with opportunities to enter the media. As Editor, David ensured that Exposure was the best showcase for the work of the young people who produced it.

David currently sits on the editorial boards of a diverse range of magazines and periodicals, straddling the line between arts and social action.

David has consulted for, among others:

The Connection at St Martins, Collage Arts, The Bridge New Deal for Communities, the GLA, Connexions North London, Make a Home, ABCtales.com, Hearing Eye press, Get Ethical.com and The Big Issue.

In 2003, David was one of the authors of a study for creative writing website www.ABCtales.com exploring the feasibility of Talecatching, a creative writing mentoring programme. For this study, he carried out research in three contrasting areas of the UK and contributed to the final model for the programme, which he later managed for www.ABCtales.com.

For Talecatching, David managed, recruited and supervised volunteers, organised a range of projects and contributed to evaluation and fundraising.

David is a published journalist and accomplished performance poet.

Mustafa Kurtuldu

In his career as a web and print designer, Mustafa Kurtuldu has worked with a variety of clients, helping them to reach their target audiences through effective and professional web and print communications.Mustafa is skilled in web development, guiding online projects from initial idea through to completion. Examples of his work include:

Design and consultancy work on the Russell Commision, Web design for the On|Off show at London Fashion week, Design for fashion Label Xterity London and Web Consultancy for Packaging Design Company Smith-Co. He also writes for the Times Online.

Mustafa has extensive experience of designing for print and addressing specific audiences through style and layout.

Mustafa applies his belief in clear communication and generating opportunities to all of his professional work. Mustafa is committed to creating opportunities for young people to gain experience through volunteering. He was involved in the Russell Commission into Youth Volunteering, which led to the setting up of V, the youth volunteering initiative.

Mustafa has worked on a variety of participatory media projects with young people, including award-winning youth magazine Exposure and Project One, a Tottenham-based youth participation magazine, and has developed and managed a comic book project drawn and written by a team of young people in North London.

Mustafa enjoys using his skills to help clients to find elegant and effective ways to use websites and printed publications to successfully achieve the objectives of their organisation or project.

Mustafa is also active within the London Turkish Community and contributes to various voluntary organisations.

Mark Brown


Mark Brown edited successful online writing website www.ABCtales.com before joining Social Spider. He wrote copy, researched articles, raised funds and developed the Talecatching programme for www.ABCtales.com and The ABCtales Foundation.Mark brought his interest in social inclusion and widening access to services to the Talecatching programme, researching and writing a feasibility study around these areas for www.ABCtales.com.

Mark has managed, recruited and supervised volunteers, planned and implemented training, raised funds for arts projects and managed live events.

Mark co-managed ethical shopping website www.getethical.com, and provided consultancy to them on promoting their brand and defining their values and objectives.

Mark was a researcher for advice website www.bigissuelists.co.uk, generating self-help advice on topics including guides to accessing benefits and mental health issues.

Mark is committed to generating opportunities for people to access arts based opportunities with a particular focus on literature and creative writing.

Stephen Gardiner – Operations Manager

Stephen has a long professional history of researching and writing material for a variety of organisations and purposes. In his career as a radio journalist he became Deputy Editor of Independent Radio News, founding Head of News at Classic FM and Managing director of Reuters Radio News.

More recently, Stephen has worked for a number of Third Sector organisations. He managed BigIssueLists.co.uk, a website offering advice on a wide range of life topics to a general audience, researching and writing all content for the site. He is company secretary of the charity, ABCtales Foundation.

Before joining Social Spider he spent two years at Amnesty International where he was director of Make Some Noise, a global music and New Media project.
