Social Spider CIC, a communications, design and community action company, secured funding from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust Charitable Funds and The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust to launch the new free magazine. ONE IN FOUR is partly written and produced by people with a mental health difficulty.
“We thought it was time that mental health issues were covered from the point of view of someone who lives with them day to day,” says Mark Brown, Editor-in-Chief, who has a mental health difficulty himself. “I know from my own experience that you don’t leave normal life when you’re diagnosed with a mental health condition or difficulty, you just have some different things to consider.”
A pilot issue of ONE IN FOUR is being distributed in South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust centres and other community venues including public libraries across London. The first issue carries articles on aspects of mental health and wellbeing, lifestyle and health advice, news and opinion and practical advice on ways of moving on after diagnosis.
Michael Lord, Project Director for The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust says : " We are delighted to be associated with ONE IN FOUR and we hope that it will soon develop into a national magazine. The Trust believes it will help raise awareness throughout the community and reduce the myths and stigma associated with mental illness."
Kumar Jacob, Chair of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust Charitable Funds, says: “This is a timely, innovative publication. It represents a new way of looking at the experience of a mental health difficulty which is complementary to the person-centred approach at this Trust.”
