Spiders launch Mental Health mag
Social Spider has secured funding from South London and Maudsley Charitable Trust and The Charlie Waller Memorial Trust to launch 'One in Four', a new free magazine written by people with mental health difficulty, for people with mental health difficulty.

Both funding bodies will be involved in the production of the magazine of ‘One In Four’, an aspirational lifestyle magazine written which goes into production this month. The innovative magazine will present information relating to mental health and well-being in accessible and attractive ways, putting the experience of mental illness firmly into the mainstream.

“We thought it was time that mental health issues were covered from the point of view of someone who lives with them day to day,” says Mark Brown, Development Director of Social Spider, himself a former mental health service user. “I know from my own experience that you don’t leave normal life when you’re diagnosed with a mental health condition or difficulty, you just have some different things to consider.”

Social Spider will produce a pilot issue of ‘One In Four’, which will be distributed in South London and Maudsley NHS Trust centres and other community venues across London. Both current mental health service users and journalists with experience of mental health difficulty will be involved in the production. The magazine will include articles on aspects of mental health and well-being, lifestyle and health advice, news and opinion and practical advice on ways to get the most out of life.

Brown says; “Part of our purpose is to produce a magazine that will be a good read for everyone, mental health difficulty or not, helping to gently educate people about mental health illness and conditions and to counter damaging myths and stigma.”
