Spiders launch Hackney youth mag |
January 2007 sees the launch of an exciting new magazine project for young people in Hackney.
Hackney Youth Service has commissioned not-for-profit social enterprise Social Spider to help young people to produce a new youth magazine for the borough.
Written by young people aged 14 to 19 living in Hackney, for young people living in Hackney, the first issue of the free magazine will be distributed in schools, colleges and public buildings around the Borough during March 2007.
“It’s really exciting,” gushes Mustafa Kurtuldu, Hackney resident and Social Spider Art Director. “I’m Hackney born and raised, so it’s great to get this chance to work with young people from my Borough to help them communicate their thoughts and ideas.”
Young people will be involved at all stages of the production of the magazine.
“We’re looking for young people in Hackney who want to be involved in writing, journalism, design and illustration”, says David Floyd, Social Spider Director and project manager for the new magazine. “We want young people to come to us and use the magazine to share their ideas with other young people. It’s a great way to pick up new skills and meet new people.”
Social Spider wants young people across Hackney to get involved in the project, which is being funded by Hackney’s Youth Opportunities Fund, a result of consultation with young people in the borough.
The magazine will celebrate the experiences and successes of Hackney’s young people, and will be the place for young people to share their unique view of the world with others.
“We’re running regular weekly sessions across the borough where young people can come down and get involved in the magazine,” says the project’s outreach worker, Aysha Tegally. “If you’re a young person in Hackney with something to say, we want to hear from you.”
